The Reality of Adopting a Baby
“Oh wow,” said my friend, holding our newborn adopted daughter, “You’re so lucky-this is the easy way to get a baby! No morning sickness, no pregnancy, no recovery!”
I smiled, knowing that although to others it may appear to be a simple process, adoption is far from easy.
I do not write this to discourage you as adoptive parents, but simply to prepare you. Much like pregnancy, there are some who get pregnant without trying, never get sick, and have a nearly effortless delivery. There are newborn adoption situations where you receive a phone call to simply go to the hospital and pick up your baby. But for every simple situation, there are also many that are much more complicated.
As a mother of both biological and adopted children, I can say that the emotional roller coaster of adoption is equal to the physical roller coaster of pregnancy. As difficult as it may be, you just have to roll with it. Without a doubt, every single one of my children was worth it. Completely worth it. So whether you are just turning in your application, or you have been through a failed adoption, realize that your baby will find you.
Before you know it, you will be smiling knowingly when someone tells you how ‘easy’ it is to adopt.
