FAQ

WILL MY BABY HATE ME?

Not at all. Placing a child for adoption is a brave and loving act; especially if you can’t provide a safe, stable, or full life for them at this time. Your baby will be placed with a loving family who has been screened and that you agree with. One day your child will be old enough to see your decision as one of love and sacrifice.

HOW MUCH WILL MY BABY KNOW ABOUT ME?

You and your chosen adoptive family will discuss what and how much you would like them to share about you and your life. The homes of adoptive families love and honor you as a birth mother and your child will be raised to understand that your act of adoption was one of love and tremendous bravery.

WHAT IS OPEN ADOPTION?

An Open Adoption is when both the birth mother and the adoptive family agree to stay in contact throughout the baby’s life. This will look and feel differently for each family and when and how much contact you have with the family and your baby will be discussed and agreed on prior to the adoption. This does not mean sharing custody or any parental rights.

IS OPEN ADOPTION BAD OR CONFUSING FOR THE BABY?

Not at all. In fact, studies have shown that it can be beneficial to the baby to stay in some form of contact with the mother and their biological family throughout their life. This won’t take away all feelings of identity confusion or feelings of loss. But knowing who you are and where their biological family comes from can be very comforting.

WHAT IF I DON’T WANT THE BABY TO KNOW WHO I AM, CAN THEY STILL FIND ME ONE DAY?

If you would like to remain anonymous then we will do everything to ensure your privacy as a birth parent. Many states have mutual consent registries to allow birth parents and their adopted child to find each other if they so choose. Ask your adoption counselor about this to better understand your rights in the state that you live in.

DOES PLACING MY BABY FOR ADOPTION COST ME ANYTHING?

There are no financial costs to you as a birth parent. Our services are absolutely free for women who are pregnant and are choosing an adoption plan for their baby. Every state has different laws on birth parent expenses, but we will help you know what is allowable in the state you will be delivering in.

WHAT DOES A GUARDIAN ANGEL PAY FOR?

During your pregnancy we cover the following:

  • Housing
  • Food
  • Clothing
  • Travel
  • Medical Fees
WILL YOU TELL ANYONE ABOUT THE ADOPTION?

Your privacy is our top priority. As trained professionals, with years of adoption experience and countless successful placements, we ensure total confidentiality as you go through the process of adoption and forever after. The choice about who you tell and if you tell anyone at all is completely up to you.

WHAT IF I GO THROUGH LABOR OR HAVE ALREADY GIVEN BIRTH BUT HAVEN’T CHOSEN A FAMILY YET?

We can still help! Our staff can work quickly to help you get your adoption plan in place and travel to you if you deliver in your hometown. Prequalified adoptive families have often been waiting for years to find a baby to make their family complete. They can be ready at a minute’s notice—a last minute call that a baby is on the way would be a welcome blessing for many of them. It is never too late to make an adoption plan.

WHO PAYS FOR THE MEDICAL BILLS?

The adoptive family pays for all medical bills that you might incur during pregnancy and delivery.

WHAT IF THE FATHER DOESN’T AGREE WITH MY ADOPTION PLAN?

Laws vary in every state. Our experienced and knowledgeable adoption counselors will help you make a plan that fits your situation. There are many factors that determine a birth father’s rights. For example, if he has not contributed to your welfare during your pregnancy or if your pregnancy was a result of a violent act he may be disqualified from parental rights.

HOW MUCH TIME DO I GET WITH MY BABY IN THE HOSPITAL?

If you choose, you can have contact with your baby during the entire hospital stay. After signing the paperwork, you will have full access to your baby.

HOW DO I CHOOSE THE BIRTHPARENTS?

We want you to be 100% comfortable with the family you choose for your baby. We have carefully evaluated and screened many potential families who are all eager to complete their own families and are looking to our adoption agency to help them do this. You will be able to choose from families all over the country who have all received criminal and child abuse clearances and who have stable financial and medical situations and live in safe neighborhoods. You will have the opportunity to look through Profile Books and read information about our families and if you have more questions about any of them, you can ask your Match Coordinator for more information about any family you’d like.

WILL I GET TO MEET THE ADOPTIVE FAMILY PRIOR TO THE ADOPTION?

We will happily help set up a conference call shortly after you’ve chosen the family. This is a very exciting time for many birth mothers as they get to finally hear the voices of the family whose lives they are about to change. You will also have the opportunity to meet the family in person prior to the birth of the baby.

HOW INVOLVED IN THE ADOPTION PROCESS CAN I BE?

At AGA we encourage you to be as involved in the adoption as possible. We want you to have a wonderful experience and will work carefully with you on your adoption plan with the level of participation that is perfect for you.

ONCE I SIGN THE ADOPTION PAPERS CAN I CHANGE MY MIND?

Laws vary by state, but in the state of Utah, you have 24 hours to make the final decision and once you sign the paperwork the decision is final.

WHERE DO I START?
